Programma

This course provides students with a conceptual and practical understanding of the principles of statistically-designed inventories as tools for monitoring forests and sustainability of forest management.
By the end of this course we will
- Learn, understand and discuss the methodologies utilized in collecting data required for sustainable forest management (SFM) assessment and monitoring
- Learn, understand and discuss alternative methodologies used for estimating and evaluating SFM indicators
- Learn, understand and discuss the benefits and limitations of commonly used forest sampling designs


Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, you should be able to:
- apply the theory and concepts behind commonly used forest sampling designs,
- correctly calculate estimates of SFM indicators of forested stands using appropriate statistical formulae, including calculating the estimate of the sampling error
- identify appropriate remote sensing data sources and modeling techniques for the spatial estimation of SFM

Descrizione dei metodi di accertamento

The final assessment will be based entirely on a final written exam (2 hours). The exam is based on questions on topics covered during the lectures/chapters of the textbook and on solving problem sets. It includes: a) 2 open questions scoring 5 points each; b) two problem sets (score = 10 points each) on the estimation of SFM indicators.
